Papers, 1850-1857.

Correspondence, legal documents, account books, maps, prospectuses, clippings and newspapers, briefs, statements, pamphlets, applications for shares, and telegraph messages kept by Hoffman (1850-1857), mostly relating to his work for Fremont and the later legal difficulties between them. After Hoffman's death in 1854, his estate carried on his lawsuit against his former employer. The collection also contains information on gold mines from all over the world. Several items are in French.

John Charles Frémont (January 21, 1813 – July 13, 1890) was an American explorer, military officer, and politician. He was a US Senator from California, and in 1856 was the first Republican nominee for President of the United States. A native of Georgia, Frémont acquired male protectors after his father's death, and became proficient in mathematics, science, and surveying.
